Ms Coombs has been a keen supporter of CBH from its inception. Now as a team member, she says of her new role, “I intend to demystify Occupational Health for our clients and supporters by providing evidence based best practice, giving the clearest advice possible. What I bring to the table is an expertise in the most current information, giving research based advice and focus on the fundamentals.”

She joins CBH from Premier Foods where she was Group Occupational Health and Wellbeing Manager between 2008 and 2010. In this role she reviewed and revolutionised Occupational Health requirements in Premier Foods, recommending an ‘in house’ service with more emphasis on the wellbeing aspects.

Before joining Premier Foods, Ms Coombs was South/South West Regional OH Manager for BUPA Wellness where she was responsible for all training and clinical governance issues in both regions and expert practitioner to all OH staff. Prior to this, as Nurse Manager for Portsmouth Hospitals, she took a clinical and strategic lead on OH matters across four hospital sites.

She was also Occupational Health Manager for Hampshire County Council, Wyeth Laboratories and Ford Motors between 1988 and 1999, honing her liaison skills, policy drafting expertise, legal research, establishing health promotion initiatives and working with OH trainers. All of which delivered sound OH programmes in each organisation.

The first ground breaking initiatives that Ms Coombs will undertake at CBH include drafting a new Drug and Alcohol Policy, the first of its kind for the construction industry. This is currently on the CBH website under consultation. She is also revising the OH Standards to incorporate updated legislation and more topical health issues such as UV protection, risk management and sleep apnoea amongst others.

Michelle Aldous, Chief executive of Constructing Better Health, said: “I’m sure that Jane Coombs will leave no stone unturned in her new role. Her experience to date and advocacy of strong research and fact based delivery will definitely ensure that we are giving our clients the best OH support available.”
