Polly Begy joins CBH as new Operations Manager

 

Polly Begy has just joined CBH as Operations Manager, a new role in the CBH team.

She is a qualified Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Practitioner with over 14 year’s construction industry experience. Polly has worked in a range of sectors including residential, refurbishment, groundworks, civil engineering and utilities. She has also been a long-time friend to and collaborator with CBH, having lent her expertise during the original CBH Pilot scheme.

Polly brings to CBH her substantial experience with creating and maintaining health and safety management systems. She is well versed in client-facing communication, reviews and audits which can only further enhance our engagement with our members. We look forward to having her onboard.

Polly says; “I’m looking forward to contributing to CBH’s drive to improve work-related health in construction. They have cast a wide net of influence throughout the industry which I’m sure will continue to produce positive change.”

 

Are you protecting the health of your Security staff on site?

 

CBH is often asked about what health checks should be undertaken for Security guards who are working on construction sites. In response, we have provided general advice to help anyone who is unsure about this issue.

Companies should always start with general risk assessments of security guards’ activities and environment.  This varies from site to site as some guards may be completely office based. This requires checks for all those coming onto site with ongoing observation via a monitor. Other guards may be required to patrol the construction site or buildings; some may be required to control traffic coming on to site.

Security Guards are exposed to hazards including, noise, working at night and/or working alone and fumes or dust from traffic and the site itself.

When looking at the current Health Assessment matrix it is possible to find some aspects of a security guard’s work activities but these checks may vary according to their work activities and each respective site. We would therefore, suggest that a Safety Critical role is likely to encompass most of the hazards/risks that a security guard may face at some point within a three year period, which is the recall schedule for safety critical workers.The health checks undertaken will include the following,


• General Health questionnaire
• Blood pressure check
• Hearing test
• Respiratory test
• Vision check, including middle distance checks for computer  use
• Colour vision check
• Mental health assessment
• Urine test, for glucose
• Mobility and coordination assessment
• Drug and alcohol screen, optional according to each individual company policy

The outcome from the fitness assessment can then be entered onto the Occupational Health National Database. This allows the employee to have their health checked against the CHAT database thereby avoiding repeated tests when moving to another site.

Have your say on the HSE in the Triennial review - Closing date 26 July 2013

 

This is an excellent opportunity to have your say on a nationwide view of health and safety.

The Department for Work and Pensions is reviewing the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in accordance with the government’s commitment to review all public bodies. The review has two purposes:

• to provide a robust challenge of the continuing need for HSE as a non-departmental public body. In particular, whether the functions carried out by HSE are still needed, and whether a non-departmental public body remains the best delivery model
• if it should remain, whether it meets the requirements of good corporate governance

This isn’t merely a review of the government’s underlying policy on health and safety at work.  They are interested in hearing views from all interested parties, but particularly from those with a direct interest in the work of the HSE.

Construction work-related health deaths number 9000 during 2012-13

 

During 2012-2013 the HSE estimates that around 5,500 new cases of cancer and 3,500 cancer-related deaths can be attributed to the construction industry every year.  This statistic overshadows positive HSE reports that deaths attributed to safety failure have fallen from 48 to 39.

Frances O’Grady of the TUC said, ““Many occupational diseases are still on the increase and much more needs to be done to protect workers from the long-term effects of their work. Every year more than 20,000 people die as a result of ill-health brought on by their working conditions.”

Improved work related health risks and fatalities still have a long way to go in construction . That is why CBH continues to champion better work related health in the industry.   Support from our readers, members and wider industry network can help diminish this appalling health statistic.
