CBH welcomes James O’Callaghan OBE as our new Chairman

James has recently retired having spent his 40-year career at Murphy, one of the UK’s leading construction and civil engineering companies. Having started his career as a Graduate Civil Engineer, James progressed through the ranks and held positions from Senior Engineer to Business Unit Manager. He has been a Main Board Director of Murphy for the last 25 years.

With a wealth of expertise to his credit, James has constructed major projects in the highways, railways, tunnels, water, waste water and utilities sectors. His numerous career achievements include overseeing the delivery of projects such as Broadgate Development, Thames Water Ring Main, Stansted Rail Link, Channel Tunnel Rail Link from Swanscombe to Thurrock and more recently Crossrail - Thames Tunnel.

As the Director of HSQE and Sustainability James fully supported the ‘never harm’ culture and all aspects of occupational health. He continues to be a strong supporter of an industry-wide occupational health scheme since the launch of CBH in 2007.

James supports industry affairs, and is involved in many industry associations and bodies with a preference for areas that concern occupational health, safety, wages and pensions. He is a non-executive director and trustee of the B&CE Benefit Schemes and a member of the Construction Joint Industry Council.

Thanks to his valuable experience, professionalism and dedication, James was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2015 for his lifetime service to the construction industry – qualities that he brings with him to CBH.

James commented: “Protecting the health of construction workers is of critical importance to us all and occupational health has a key role to play in identifying and controlling health risks. I will use my knowledge and experience of working within the construction sector to deliver a valued occupational health scheme which supports the industry and which makes a better life possible for those who work within it”.

CBH welcomes John Allot as a new Board member

We are pleased to welcome John to the CBH Board. He has had a long and varied career in the construction industry, starting out as an apprentice plumber then moving into public and private sectors. In 1999, John became a full time Officer for the AEEU (Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union) covering the South Yorkshire area. In 2003, he was appointed National Officer.

John has also been involved with the Ministry of Defence, local authorities, food and beverage and the plumbing industries. He then became the Unite Construction National Officer in 2010.

John is currently the Chair of the SNJIB and a Trustee of Plumbing Pensions. We look forward to his contribution to the further growth of CBH.

CBH collaboration on the Construction Health Survey with ECA and BESA

The Electrical Contractors' Association and the BESA have collaborated with Constructing Better Health to undertake a sector-wide building services engineering survey on occupational health.

The move follows the recent construction industry occupational health summit, and it aims to provide ECS and the BESA with essential information to help improve occupational health (OH) management across the sector.
